What difference will it make?
The Fostering, Adoption and Social Work Foundation Training is designed to equip practitioners with an effective approach to supporting families and improving emotional health and wellbeing for children, young people and their parents or carers. Particularly those families who have contact with social services or include Looked After Children.
The training explains the fundamentals of brain development, attachment and emotional health in accessible, relevant terms to support practitioners within the social work sector. Equipped with this knowledge and working through a series of real-life case studies prepares practitioners to engage families and young people with confidence to make a real and lasting impact.
The Togetherness team are passionate about early intervention and responsive relationships supporting mental health and wellbeing. The Solihull Approach model at the heart of all our training and resources has a significant evidence base both quantitative and qualitative showing the improvements for:

Course content
- Introduction to infant, early childhood and adolescent brain development
- The Solihull Approach: Containment, Reciprocity, and Behaviour Management
- Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs), attachment and trauma
- Understanding behaviour, including sleep problems, bedwetting and soiling
- Understanding mood disorder, depression and self-harm
- Preventing and managing challenging behaviour
Delivery
The Fostering, Adoption and Social Work 2 Day Foundation Training is designed for any practitioner working with babies, young children and school-aged children, young people and their families who are in contact with social services.
‘Open training’ is delivered throughout the year for individual bookings to a cohort of up to 12 delegates.
‘Closed’ training is bespoke delivered for teams of staff of up to 12 individuals within an organisation with a relevant resource pack.
The Fostering, Adoption and Social Work Foundation Training can be delivered as ‘live virtual’ training or face-to-face training by Togetherness trainers, as required.
There are 14 days between Day One and Day Two of the training to enhance theory into practice.

Resources
Delegates will require a supporting Resource Pack (age-appropriate depending on profession) which includes a comprehensive summary of the Solihull Approach theoretical model, case studies, and a series of frameworks and guides for parents on various issues in the first five years : for example, sleeping, eating, toileting, playing, emotional and physical development. In the school years, it also covers an introduction to specific issues such as depression, phobias, and eating disorders.
