The impact of the pandemic

Understanding the impact of the 2020 covid-19 coronavirus pandemic on emotional wellbeing – for parents

The Covid-19 pandemic presented a global challenge at a scale never before experienced by our generation. ‘Lockdowns’, isolation and social distancing affected everyone and while for the most part we have celebrated a return to pre-pandemic living, the impact is still significant for emotional wellbeing, particularly for our young people.

“For young people, social isolation, disruption to learning and critically, major changes in important, guiding relationships, came at a time where the foundations of their emotional wellbeing was still being shaped. School aged children and teenagers are shaped by their relationships with their understanding of themselves literally wired into their brain during this period. The impact therefore was significant and still relevant to understanding their mental health and behaviour today.”

Karen Ladd

Parenting Strategy Coordinator, Shropshire Council.
