Combined Foster Carer Foundation Training and Foster Carer Group Facilitators’ Training

Looking to train a group, whole team or organisation in emotional health and wellbeing?

The Togetherness Fostering, Adoption and Social Work Foundation Training introduces the same principles from our Foundation Training but with a focus on application in social work contexts. As a Combined Training, delegates will also be supported to understand how to facilitate a Togetherness Foster Carer group to fostering parents. Foundation training looks at the Solihull Approach model as integrative theories and applies to practical examples within foster work contexts to consider the importance of relationships and nurturing connected, sensitive and responsive interactions. Additional specialist information about trauma and the impact of adverse childhood experiences ensures practical considerations are appropriately tailored. The group facilitation training equips practitioners to deliver a structured, evidence-based foster carer course to families in the community.

What difference will it make?

The Combined Foster Carer Training will introduce practitioners to the Solihull Approach theoretical model on Day 1 and then on Day 2 will train them to facilitate the 12-week ‘Understanding your foster child’s behaviour’ group. 

The Solihull Approach model at the heart of all our training and resources has a significant evidence base both quantitative and qualitative showing the improvements for: 

  • the parent-child relationship 
  • child prosocial behaviour 
  • behaviour difficulties 
  • parental anxiety and stress  
  • practitioner satisfaction 

Course content

  • Introduction to infant, early childhood and adolescent brain development 
  • Understanding behaviour as a communication 
  • The Solihull Approach: Containment, Reciprocity, Behaviour Management 
  • The effects of abuse and neglect on the brain 
  • The impact of bullying and understanding sleep problems, bedwetting and soiling 
  • Understanding mood disorder, depression and self-harm 
  • How practitioners can support preventing and managing challenging behaviour 
  • Introduction to the Facilitators’ Manual and how to facilitate the Togetherness foster carer group 

Delivery

The Combined Foster Carer Training is designed for any practitioner working with babies, young children and school-aged children, young people and their families who are looked after by foster carers. 

‘Open training’ is delivered throughout the year for individual bookings to a cohort of up to 12 delegates. 

‘Closed’ training is bespoke delivered for teams of staff of up to 12 individuals within an organisation with a relevant resource pack. 

The Antenatal Foundation Training can be delivered as ‘live virtual’ training or face-to-face training by Togetherness trainers, as required. 

There are 14 days between Day One and Day Two of the training to enhance theory into practice.
