Healthy approaches to conflict

Using a video series of children’s reflections on their own fallouts, the campaign introduced the idea of modelling behaviours and explored the children’s experiences of conflict in their own homes – holding up a mirror to parents who may see their own unhealthy patterns reflected back.

The campaign aimed to ‘nudge’ parents into addressing their own behaviours and taking action by joining the online pathway, Understanding your relationships. The pathway normalises disagreement and conflict within relationships and families, whilst encouraging healthy strategies to fall out, make up – or agree to disagree, healthily.

Parental conflict is known to have an impact on children’s mental health, with abuse and household dysfunction recognised as an indicator of higher mental health risk. Whilst there is targeted support for more acute issues such as domestic abuse, there is growing recognition for the importance of early, universal support in helping prevention; supporting all parents to understand emotional health and relationships, and increasing awareness about processing emotions.

Reducing conflict in parent relationships

Understanding your relationships introduces ideas about healthy conflict resolution strategies in an accessible way. Combining self-reflection with key ideas from psychology about healthy relationships, the online course aims to reduce conflict in parent relationships by guiding learners through a structured journey of understanding emotional health and processing difficult feelings. Although used for general access and to raise preventative awareness, the course is also being used by practitioners to support families navigating violence or other conflict difficulties.

Adopting the solid foundations of Togetherness, the pathway provides a space to think and reflect about anger and conflict in a non-stigmatised, non-judgemental way. It introduces empathetic, attuned approaches to conflict that should help families to create happier home environments – and feedback shows the positive impact this is making on relationships.

From over 1,000 parents completing the pathway, pre- and post-course responses (Relationship Assessment Scale) showed a statistically significant positive shift in the closeness of interpersonal relationships.
